Easing the transition process

The First Few Weeks After Moving into a Nursing Home Can Cause Anxiety and Concern

As you and your loved ones prepare for the transition into a skilled care facility, whether temporarily for rehab services or for long-term care, there are steps you can take that will make the process easier for everyone involved.

  1. Do your research about the facility that your family chose. Share what you've learned with your family member making the move with enthusiasm.
  2. Practice prioritized and organized packing. Once they are in their new room, having access to the things that remind them of home can make all the difference.
  3. Ensure that all practical and financial concerns are taken care of. For example, many seniors worry about what will happen with their pets if they move into a care facility. Find good homes for their pets before the move, so they are reassured that their cuddly companions are safe.
  4. Once your aging family member is settled, be sure to stop by frequently. Ask questions about their day-to-day experiences, new friends they've made, and what they might need to make their stay more enjoyable.
  5. Help them access new activities, groups, and opportunities. Nursing homes have extensive enrichment programs, social events, and community outreach that can help seniors feel involved and included.
